A hidden edge does not automatically deserve the cheapest finish. If it carries the shade on a narrow metal ring, its diameter and contact face may be more important than its gloss. These categories describe different outcomes. "Polished" should not be used as shorthand for fire-polished. Mechanical polishing removes material with abrasives and polishing tools. Ground edges control size and contact

Grinding is useful when the rim has to meet a diameter, height, flatness, or squareness requirement after the shade is formed. The edge is normally matte because the abrasive texture remains visible. Fire polishing changes the edge with heat

Fire polishing, also called flame polishing, reheats the surface until it softens enough to smooth sharp features and create a rounded glossy appearance. It is common in some mouth-blown and tubular glass work. It is not the same as annealing, tempering, or a mechanical polish.

Heat can soften corners, round a cut face, and move the final dimension. The result depends on glass composition, wall thickness, rim geometry, heat input, and process control. A fire-polished rim should therefore be approved after the operation, not measured only before it.

Review the sample with the real hardware

A rim sample should be reviewed with the holder, ring, clips, gasket, screws, or threaded part that will be used in production. A nominal opening can pass a caliper check and still seat poorly because the contact face, wall taper, or local waviness is wrong.
